Telemark skiing, also
called "free heel" skiing, is actually the oldest form of skiing.
Prior to the invention of lock-down bindings, all skiers "telemarked".
Originating in Telemark, Norway, a telemark skiier is attached to the
ski only at the toe binding. That is, the skier's heel is free to lift
up. Turns are made by extending the downhill ski forward while
dropping back on the uphill (or inside) ski - the opposite of what you
do to make an alpine turn! You perform a telemark turn as a series of
knee-bends on the inside ski during which your heel raises off the ski.
